Are We Human, or Are We Skater? was a performance by five non-skaters. Over a weekend, we gathered to create our own repertoire of skate tricks to pull from as we improvised a group choreography. Failure and success became almost indistinguishable. When the aim is to be bad at something over and over again, is it a failure to start getting kind of good at it? “Failure”, or in this case, the success of actually landing a sick trick, was still met with enthusiastic cheers and board claps, as it would be at the park or on the street. Are We Human, or Are We Skater? exposes slippages between failure and success.
